In 1997, Evans had his first acknowledged appearance in Biodiversity: Wild About Life!, a short instructional video. Evans modelled for “Tyler” in Hasbro’s board game Mystery Date in 1999. On the game box, Evans is pictured conversing into an electronic phone that came with the special version of the game. He moved to Los Angeles in September 2000 and lived at the Oakwood Apartments in Toluca Lake, where he met other young performers. When asked about his memories from that time, he stated, “You develop a lot of odd relationships with a lot of thirsty people, but you’re also one of them. It was a fantastic experience. That was the case. It’s similar to the L.A. welcome committee “. He starred in The Perfect Score, a 2004 adolescent heist comedy about a gang of kids who break into an office to steal SAT exam answers. The film was critically derided; the BBC’s Matthew Leyland called Evans’ performance “bland,” and the actors lacked “chemistry.” In the same year, he played alongside Jason Statham, Kim Basinger, and William H. Macy in the action thriller Cellular. Evans plays Ryan, a college student who receives a phone call from a kidnapped woman (Basinger) and must rescue her. Despite mixed reviews, Slant Magazine’s review stated that “Evans proved himself to be a fairly charismatic leading man.”

Anthony and Joe Russo directed both of these films; they had planned to shoot them simultaneously but decided against it due to logistical issues. Evans and Scarlett Johansson admitted that they didn’t get the entire script for Avengers: Infinity War before filming, saying, “We had to fight for a physical copy of the script. On an iPad, they were offering us either pages or pieces. It’s been a challenge.”  While Evans and co-star Chris Hemsworth were praised by USA Today as “a blast to watch” in Avengers: Infinity War, a Time magazine reviewer panned the film for its lack of rhythm and suspense. Evans appeared in Defending Jacob, an Apple TV+ crime drama miniseries based on the same-named novel, in 2020. Andy Barber, an assistant district attorney whose son is suspected of murder, was played by him.
