Green was born in the city of Houston in the state of Texas. He was in the sixth grade when he was involved in an accident that resulted in the loss of a large chunk of his right ring finger. When he attempted a dunk on a homemade basketball hoop, he was wearing a ring on his right ring finger. His finger was shredded when the ring snagged on a nail on the goal, and amputation was the only alternative.
Green did not begin playing high school basketball until his sophomore year, when he was a member of J. Frank Dobie High School’s junior varsity team. He made the varsity team his junior year, but his season was cut short due to academic concerns. Green transferred to Gulf Shores Academy in Houston, a charter school, where he repeated his junior year. He averaged 33 points per game as a senior at Gulf Shores.
Green was widely projected to be one of the top players selected, but he was selected with the 18th choice in the NBA draught by the Celtics. Prior to the draught, he decided to give individual workouts solely to the clubs with the top six picks, which led to his downfall. In the weeks preceding up to the game, Green was compared to former Houston Rockets teammate and star Tracy McGrady.
