Antetokounmpo, who was born in Greece to Nigerian parents, began his basketball career with the Filathlitikos minor teams in Athens. He began playing for the club’s senior team in 2011 before being drafted 15th overall by the Bucks in the 2013 NBA draught. The term “Greek Freak” was given to Antetokounmpo because of his nationality, as well as his mix of size, quickness, and ball-handling abilities. He led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories in 2016–17, becoming the first player in NBA history to finish a regular season in the top 20 in each of the five categories of total points, rebounds, assists, thefts, and blocks. In 2017, he was named the Most Improved Player. Antetokounmpo has been named to the All-Star team five times.

Antetokounmpo became the first player in NBA history to win back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player Awards in 2019 and 2020, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players to win two MVPs before turning 26. In addition to his MVP honour, he was elected NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, making him only the third player in NBA history to win both accolades, behind Michael Jordan (1988) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994).

Antetokounmpo was born Giannis Adetokunbo on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece, to Nigerian immigrants.  His parents had emigrated from Lagos three years before, leaving their firstborn son, Francis, with his grandparents. Despite the fact that Antetokounmpo and three of his four brothers were born in Greece, they were not granted full Greek citizenship as Greek nascent citizens.

Antetokounmpo was practically stateless for the first 18 years of his life, having no paperwork from either Nigeria or Greece. After obtaining Greek citizenship in 2013, his family changed their surname from Adetokunbo to Antetokounmpo in order to adhere to Greek spelling regulations more accurately.

Family Life of Giannis Antetokounmpo:

Antetokounmpo was born and raised in the Sepolia suburb of Athens. Because his parents couldn’t find job because they were immigrants, Giannis and his older brother, Thanasis, helped by selling watches, purses, and sunglasses on the streets. Antetokounmpo began playing basketball in 2007.  His name was legally romanized as Giannis Anastasios when he formally became a Greek citizen on May 9, 2013,. During the 2011–12 season, Antetokounmpo was a member of Filathlitikos’ senior men’s team in the semi-pro Greek B Basket League (Third Division).

Antetokounmpo inked a four-year contract with Spanish team CAI Zaragoza in December 2012, just days after turning 18, which reportedly included NBA buyouts after each season. Several other prominent European clubs had expressed interest in signing him. During the 2012–13 Greek A2 League season, Antetokounmpo averaged 22.5 minutes per game and shot 46.4 percent from the field (62.1 percent on two-point field goals), 31.3 percent from three-point range, and 72.0 percent from the free throw line. He averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game over 26 games.  He was also chosen as a special participant in the 2013 Greek League by the coaches.

Antetokounmpo declared himself eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft on April 28, 2013. The Milwaukee Bucks selected him 15th overall, confirming his draught forecasts as a first-round choice. He signed his rookie scale contract with the Bucks on July 30, 2013. At the age of 18 years and 311 days, Antetokounmpo made his NBA debut on October 13, 2013, making him one of the NBA’s youngest players ever. During his first season, he averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks in 77 appearances. He scored in the double digits 23 times and grabbed at least 10 rebounds twice, resulting in double-doubles in both cases.

He led all NBA rookies in total blocks with 61, and he was the seventh-most by a Bucks rookie in franchise history. He was chosen to compete in the NBA All-Star Weekend Rising Stars Challenge in New Orleans, where he finished with nine points, two rebounds, and two assists in 17 minutes. He was chosen to the second team of the 2013–14 NBA All-Rookie team at the end of the season.
