Rowling’s biography has been described as a “rags to riches” storey, with her rising from being a welfare recipient to being crowned the world’s first millionaire author by Forbes.  Rowling denied the claim, claiming that she was not a billionaire. According to Forbes, she lost her billionaire designation after donating a large portion of her fortune to charity. Her UK sales total more than £238 million, making her the best-selling artist in the country.

Her name was Joanne Rowling before she remarried, despite the fact that she writes under the pen name J. K. Rowling. Her publishers requested that she use two initials instead of her full name, assuming that the target audience of young boys would be unwilling to read a book written by a woman. She chose K (for Kathleen) as the second initial of her pen name because she didn’t have a middle name.

Anne (née Volant), a scientific technician, and Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, gave birth to Joanne Rowling on July 31, 1965  in Yate, Gloucestershire In 1964, her parents met on a train from King’s Cross Station going for Arbroath.  They tied the knot on March 14, 1965.Dugald Campbell, one of Rowling’s maternal great-grandfathers, was a Scot.

Family Life of J. K. Rowling:

When Rowling was 23 months old, her sister Dianne  was born in their house.  When Rowling was four years old, the family relocated to the adjacent community of Winterbourne. Rowling used to write fantasy novels as a child, which she would read to her sister. Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, near Chepstow, Wales, when she was nine years old.  She used to be a teenage teetering teetering teetering

Rowling has admitted that her adolescent years were difficult. Her mother’s diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and a troubled relationship with her father, with whom she is not on speaking terms, affected her home life. Rowling later revealed that she modelled Hermione Granger’s persona on herself when she was eleven years old. Sean Harris, her best buddy in the Upper Sixth, was the proud owner of a turquoise necklace.

Rowling went to St Michael’s Primary School, which was founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More when she was a child.  Alfred Dunn, her headmaster at St Michael’s, has been regarded as the model for Harry Potter’s headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Her mother worked in the science department at Wyedean School and College, where she attended secondary school.

Rowling finalised her Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone manuscript in 1995, typing it on an old manual typewriter.  The Fulham-based Christopher Little Literary Agency agreed to represent Rowling in her search for a publisher after hearing from Bryony Evens, a reader who had been requested to review the book’s first three chapters. The novel was sent to twelve publishers.

Rowling worked for Amnesty International in London as a researcher and bilingual secretary, then relocated to Manchester  with her partner to work for the Chamber of Commerce.  In 1990, she was on a four-hour delayed train ride from Manchester to London when the idea for a narrative about a little kid attending a school of magic “came completely formed” in her mind. When she gets there

Rowling moved to Porto, Portugal, to teach English as a foreign language after seeing an advertisement in The Guardian. While listening to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, she began composing during the day.  After 18 months in Porto, she met Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese television journalist, in a pub and discovered they shared a love of Jane Austen.  They tied the knot on October 16th.

Rowling considered herself a failure seven years after graduating from university.  Her marriage had ended in divorce, and she was jobless with a child, but she saw her failure as “liberating” and allowed her to focus on writing. She was diagnosed with serious depression and contemplated suicide during this time. Dementors, soul-sucking characters, were inspired by her despair.
