Thompson was born to Julie and Mychal Thompson in Los Angeles. His mother played volleyball at the University of Portland and the University of San Francisco in college, while his father was the first overall pick in the NBA draught in 1978. Thompson and his family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, when he was two years old, where he was childhood friends and Little League teammates with future NBA star Klay Thompson.

As a junior, Hompson led the Pac-10 in scoring, receiving first-team All-Pac-10 accolades once more. He became only the third Cougar in history to earn first-team all-district accolades twice in his career from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. [16] In addition, he became the first Cougar to win Pac-10 Player of the Week three times when he earned the title for the week of Nov. 22–28,[18] extending his streak of Pac-10 Player of the Week wins to three.

Thompson declared for the 2011 NBA draught after his junior season, and the Golden State Warriors selected him 11th overall. The Warriors’ selection of a guard sparked speculation that they would move starter Monta Ellis, but that did not happen until March of 2012.  Thompson’s shooting ability was commended by Warriors general manager Larry Riley, who showed faith in Thompson’s capacity to grow.
