Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging, and Being Yourself, which Gubler authored and illustrated, was released on April 2, 2019. It’s marketed as a children’s book, but Gubler believes it’s appropriate for people of all ages. “For anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t quite fit in, just to let them know that they’re not alone…,” she says. In creating the book, I hoped to find a way to give back to the world.
Rumple Buttercup is a delicate monster that is so self-conscious about his appearance – green skin, five crooked teeth, and three strands of hair – that he spends his life hiding in a sewer because he is afraid of being rejected by people. He only appears at night, disguised as a banana peel on his head. Eventually, he realises that, despite his flaws, people accept him. Gubler has been seen in promotional events wearing a 7-foot-tall Rumple costume or a banana peel on his head. He had intended to self-publish the book, but after his first meeting with the Random House publishers, he concluded that they would be a good fit for him: “The Random House publishers came to the meeting with banana peels on their heads, and I was immediately fascinated.”
