Horan auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor in Dublin in 2010, when he was sixteen years old. The judges had mixed feelings about his performance of “So Sick.” Cheryl Cole and guest judge Katy Perry were on his side, while Louis Walsh thought he needed more time to mature. Simon Cowell voted to let him through, while Cole voted no, Walsh voted yes, and Perry voted yes. Horan was then sent to boot camp. He sang “Champagne Supernova” at bootcamp but didn’t qualify for the category. The group met for two weeks to get to know one another and perfect their skills. One Direction performed an acoustic version of “Torn” as their qualifying song in the “judges’ houses” and their debut song as a group. The performance convinced Simon Cowell that the trio “were confident, fun, like a band of pals, and sort of fearless as well,” as he subsequently stated. They were Cowell’s last act in the competition inside the first four weeks of the live shows. The band performed a variety of songs during the competition, including Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” and Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which soon gained fame in the Silver Islands. They came in third place.
