Robert Lawrence Stine (/stan/; born October 8, 1943) is an American author, short storey writer, television producer, screenwriter, and executive editor who is also known as Jovial Bob Stine and Eric Affabee. Stine has been dubbed the “Stephen King of children’s literature”and is the author of numerous horror fiction works, including the Fear Street, Goosebumps, and Roald Dahl series.

Stine was born in Columbus, Ohio, on October 8, 1943 o Lewis Stine, a shipping clerk, and Anne Feinstein. He was born and raised in Bexley, Ohio.  He was born into a Jewish household. Under the pen name Jovial Bob Stine, Stine wrote hundreds of children’s novels and founded the humour magazine Bananas.  Between 1975 and 1984, Scholastic Press published 72 issues of Bananas for teenagers, as well as numerous “Yearbooks” and paperback books. Stine served as editor and was responsible for much of the writing (other contributors included Robert Leighton, Suzanne Lord, and Jane Samuels, among others).


Stine began writing Fear Street books in 1989.  Stine wrote three funny science fiction books in the Space Cadets series before starting the Goosebumps series: Jerks in Training, Bozos on Patrol, and Losers in Space.Goosebumps was published in 1992 by Stine and Parachute Press.

Stine worked on volumes of five separate book series in the first decade of the twenty-first century, including Mostly Ghostly, Rotten School, Fear Street, The Nightmare Room, Goosebumps Horrorland, and the stand-alone novels Dangerous Girls (2003) and The Taste of Night (2004). Also available is The Haunting Hour Volume One: Don’t Think About It, a direct-to-DVD film. The picture, which stars Emily Osment, was released by Univ.

Stine was ranked 36th on Forbes’ list of the 40 highest-paid entertainers in 1996–97, with a net worth of $41 million for the fiscal year. As of 2008, his works had sold over 400 million copies worldwide, and were on numerous bestseller lists. During the 1990s, Stine was named America’s best-selling novelist three times in a row by USA Today.

R.L. Stine was born in 1943 in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were Anne and Lewis Stine. Harlan Williams Stine (also known as Bill) and Pamela Stine, his younger brother and sister, were born after him. He was never referred to as R.L. by anyone in his family. Bob is his nickname. When he first began publishing horror novels, he chose the name R.L. Stine because he wanted readers to remember him.

Jane went on to work as an editor and writer, and they collaborated on several projects.
