Salma Hayek is a cinema actress and producer from Mexico and the United States. She began her career in Mexico, where she starred in the telenovela Teresa and was nominated for an Ariel Award for the film El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley). Hayek’s breakout role was as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in the 2002 film Frida, for which she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well as producing. This film drew a lot of attention and was a critical and financial success.

Hayek was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series after guest-starring in the ABC television comedy-drama Ugly Betty in 2007. She won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Children/Youth/Family Special for The Maldonado Miracle in 2004. From 2009 through 2013, she also appeared as a guest star on the NBC comedy series 30 Rock.

Grown Ups (2010), Puss in Boots (2011), Grown Ups 2 (2013), Tale of Tales (2015), Sausage Party (2016), The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017), Like a Boss (2020), and Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard (2020) are among Hayek’s later projects (2021). Hayek has been married to François-Henri Pinault, a French business magnate, since 2009, and they have a daughter together.


Salma Hayek Jiménez was born in the Mexican state of Veracruz, in the town of Coatzacoalcos.  Her father, Sami Hayek Domnguez, is a Lebanese Mexican, with origins from Baabdat, Lebanon, which Salma and her father visited in 2015 to promote her film The Prophet, directed by Kahlil Gibran. He owns an industrial equipment company and works for an oil company in Mexico, where he once ran for president.

Diana Jiménez Medina, her mother, is a Mexican of Spanish heritage who works as an opera singer and talent scout. Hayek described herself as fifty-percent Lebanese and fifty-percent Spanish in a 2015 interview with Un Nuevo Da while in Madrid, adding that her grandmother/maternal great-grandparents came from Spain.  Sami (born 1972), her younger brother, is a furniture designer.

Hayek was up in an affluent, devout Catholic family and chose to attend the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, when he was 12 years old.  She was diagnosed with dyslexia in school.  She studied international relations at the Universidad Ibero americana, where she earned her bachelor’s degree.  Hayek revealed in a 2011 interview with V magazine that she was once an illegal immigrant in the United States.


Hayek got the title role in Teresa (1989), a blockbuster Mexican telenovela that catapulted her to stardom in Mexico, when she was just 23 years old.  Hayek featured in the film El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley) in 1994, which has received more awards than any other film in Mexican cinema history. Hayek was nominated for an Ariel Award for her performance.

Hayek travelled to Los Angeles in 1991 to seek a film career[25] and study acting with Stella Adler, despite having weak English fluency and dyslexia.  After a modest appearance in the 1993 film Mi vida loca, director Robert Rodriguez recognised her, and his co-producer and then-wife, Elizabeth Avellan, quickly cast Hayek opposite Antonio Banderas in the 1995 film Despera.

In the 1997 romantic comedy Fools Rush In, Hayek co-starred with Matthew Perry. She co-starred in Will Smith’s Wild Wild West in 1999. Serendipity, a minor part in Kevin Smith’s Dogma, was also played by her.  Hayek had an uncredited acting role in Traffic in 2000, opposite Benicio del Toro. She appeared in Once Upon a Time in MGM in 2003, reprising her role from Desperado.

Hayek launched the film production firm Ventanarosa in the year 2000, through which she produces films and television shows. El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba, Mexico’s official submission for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars, was her debut movie as a producer.  Hayek co-produced Frida, which was released in 2002. The film, directed by Julie Taymor and starring Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo and Alfred Molina as her adulterous husband, Diego Rivera, included an entourage of stars in supporting and small roles (Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Edward Norton, Geoffrey Rush) and cameos (Antonio Banderas). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.
