Sam Roland Heughan is a Scottish actor, producer, novelist, and entrepreneur who was born on April 30, 1980. He is most known for his portrayal of Jamie Fraser in the Starz historical drama series Outlander (2014–present), for which he got nominations for the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor and the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television.

In June 2019, the University of Stirling awarded Heughan an honorary doctorate “in recognition of his great contribution to acting and humanitarian endeavours.” In July 2019, the University of Glasgo  awarded him his second honorary doctorate in honour of his artistic achievements and charity contributions. Clanlands was co-written by Heughan and his Outlander co-star Graham McTavish.

Sam Roland Heughan was born on April 30, 1980, in Balmaclellan, Dumfries and Galloway, in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire. His parents were members of Gandalf’s Garden, a hippy community in London highly influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien’s works, and this inspired them to name Heughan and his older brother Cirdan after characters from The Lord of the Rings.

Heughan made his stage debut in Outlying Islands, a play by Scottish dramatist David Greig, while still a student. The piece premiered at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre before transferring to London’s Royal Court Theatre.  For his performance, Heughan was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer. Heughan and Outlander co-star Graham McTavish co-wrote Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other in November 2020. The book was a smash hit, debuting at No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller Lists for hardcover nonfiction and a combined print and e-book nonfiction, as well as No. 1 on the Publishers Weekly Bestseller List for hardcover nonfiction.

He also appeared in several television shows at that time, including an episode of ITV’s Midsomer Murders, ITV’s crime thriller Rebus, and two episodes of BBC’s political drama Party Animals. Heughan appeared in numerous live shows between 2007 and 2009, including Nol Coward’s The Vortex at the Royal Exchange Theatre and Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Citizen’s Theatre.

Young Alexander the Great, a direct-to-video film shot in Egypt about the life of the youngster who would become Alexander the Great, stars Heughan as the title character.  He went on to feature in the BBC television film First Light, which tells the narrative of RAF pilot Geoffrey Wellum’s adventures flying a Spitfire during the Battle of Britain, as detailed in his WWII memoir.

In 2011, Heughan starred as Prince Ashton in the Hallmark Channel original film A Princess for Christmas, in which he appeared with Roger Moore and received a nomination for Most Inspiring Performance in Television at the 20th Annual Grace Awards. At the Bridewell Theatre, he appeared in Steve Waters’ sold-out production Amphibians, a dual narrative of Olympic swimmers Max and Elsa.

Heughan landed the role of Jamie Fraser in the Starz time-travel drama series Outlander in 2013.  He was the first formal cast member, receiving high acclaim from the series’ author, Diana Gabaldon, who commented, “That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart.” I’m appreciative to the production staff for their painstaking work in making Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie.

In 2014, Heughan made his independent film debut in Emulsion, a psychological thriller about a man haunted by the loss of his wife. Heughan also participated in the comedy Heart of Lightness, alongside two of his future Outlander co-stars: Laura Donnelly (who plays Jamie Murray’s sister Jenny Murray) and Rosie Day (who played Mary Hawkins in the second season of Outlander).

As the Mirror Master in the Interactive Entertainment video game Lego DC Super-Villains. In May of that year, Heughan appeared alongside Cameron McNeish on BBC Two Scotland’s special The Adventure Show, in an episode titled “Take A Hike,” which focused on Scotland’s love of walking.  Heughan will also play Corporal Jimmy Dalton in Bloodshot, a film adaptation of the best-selling novel.
