Samuel M. Raimi (born October 23, 1959) is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor best known for directing the Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007) and developing the cult horror Evil Dead series. He also directed Darkman, a 1990 superhero picture, A Simple Plan, a 1998 neo-noir crime thriller, The Gift, a 2000 supernatural thriller, Drag Me to Hell, a 2009 supernatural horror film, and Oz the Great and Powerful, a 2013 Disney fantasy film. Raimi is also the creator of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, both of which were hugely popular television programs. In 1979, he created Renaissance Pictures, a production firm.

Sam Raimi (Film Director)

Raimi became interested in filmmaking after his father brought a camera home one day. With his friend Bruce Campbell, whom he met in 1975, he began making Super 8 films. In college, he collaborated with his brother’s roommates Robert Tapert and Campbell on the films Within the Woods (1978), a 32-minute horror film that raised $375,000, and It’s Murder!, his first feature film. During this time, he also shot Clockwork (1978), a 7-minute short film starring Scott Spiegel, who had previously acted in Within the Woods, and Cheryl Guttridge. Raimi was able to finance the creation of the extremely successful horror picture The Evil Dead (1981) through family, friends, and a network of investors. Shortly after, he started work on his third feature, Crimewave (1985), which he co-wrote with the then-unknown Coen brothers. The picture, which was supposed to be a live-action comic book, was a flop, thanks in part to studio interference. With the iconic Evil Dead II, Raimi returned to the horror genre (which added slapstick humor to the over-the-top horror, showcasing his love of the Three Stooges). Sam Raimi also penned Easy Wheels (1989), a satire of the Outlaw motorcycle film genre, with his brother Ivan Raimi (and credited themselves as Celia Abrams). He attempted to convert “The Shadow” into a film but was unable to get the rights, so he developed his own super-heavy character.

Family Life of Sam Raimi :

Raimi has worked with Joel and Ethan Coen on numerous occasions, dating back to when Joel was one of the editors on Evil Dead. In the mid-1980s, the Coens collaborated with Raimi on the films Crimewave and The Hudsucker Proxy (though Hudsucker was not produced for almost a decade). Raimi appeared in Miller’s Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy, and Spies Like Us alongside Joel Coen. Based on their experiences with Fargo, the Coen brothers advised Raimi on shooting in the snow for A Simple Plan. In front of the camera, he played a dimwitted hitman in The Stand, a slain gas station attendant in John Carpenter’s Body Bags, and a fumbling assistant to Alan Arkin in Indian Summer, which is possibly his most well-known portrayal. Mike Binder, his childhood buddy, and writer-director, wrote and directed the film, which was shot at the camp where they both attended when they were youngsters. Based on the original Japanese movie, Raimi also developed the whole English-language The Grudge franchise. On July 22, 2009, Blizzard Entertainment announced that Sam Raimi will direct a Warcraft film. However, it was stated at Comic-Con International 2012 that he will not be directing the World of Warcraft adaptation. He became the producer for the British supernatural thriller Refuge, directed by Corin Hardy and released by Mandate Pictures, on September 23, 2009. Under his new business Spooky Pictures, he will produce a remake of the Danish thriller The Substitute, directed by Scott Derrickson. The British thriller Burst 3D, directed by Neil Marshall, was produced by Raimi’s firm Ghost House Pictures.

The website SuperHero Hype announced on December 11, 2006, that director Sam Raimi and producer Michael Uslan would co-produce a new film adaptation of The Shadow for Columbia Pictures. Raimi announced on October 16, 2007, that: “I don’t have any updates on ‘The Shadow,’ save that my business, which I co-own with Josh Donen, my producing partner, has acquired the rights to the film. I adore the character, and we’re trying to come up with a plot that will do him honor.” The remake of Raimi’s The Evil Dead was produced by Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert. Fede Alvarez, a first-time feature filmmaker, wrote and directed the picture, and Diablo Cody was called in to rework and rewrite the script. However, Bruce Campbell stated in a 2014 interview that Army of Darkness 2 would not be made “It’s all nonsense from the internet. There is no such thing as reality. If these odd things come out of my or Sam Raimi’s mouths, we’ll be making a sequel before we know it.” Raimi’s involvement in the upcoming Warner Bros. film World War 3 was confirmed on February 26, 2016. The film will be based on a possible future inspired by George Friedman’s book The Next 100 Years. Raimi will film a thriller about the Bermuda Triangle for Skydance Media, according to reports from February 16, 2017. Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard wrote the story. On January 29, 2018, Raimi was slated to helm The Name of the Wind, the first in a series of film adaptations of Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy, with Rothfuss and Lin-Manuel Miranda serving as executive producers. Raimi was in talks with Marvel Studios to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on February 5, 2020, and Raimi confirmed his involvement in April 2020. This is Raimi’s first directorial effort since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and his first return to the superhero picture genre since Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
